class="wp-block-paragraph">Lately, it is AI Overviews. Before, it was “the latest Google update.” And in some companies, when an uncomfortable meeting arises, it is directly the previous agency.

It is almost never what was initially thought.

The problem is not a lack of data. Behind an organic traffic drop there is always a trail, and Search Console has been saving exactly what is needed to find it for months.

What fails is the order: first the cause is decided, and then evidence is sought to confirm it. This results in three months spent fixing something that was working while what was broken remains the same.

Here are the steps, in the order in which they should be taken.

Verify that the drop exists

It sounds absurd, but it is the first place to look. Many traffic drops are actually measurement drops.

An analytics tag that falls off during a deployment and no one reviews it. A change in the cookie banner that reduces the percentage of users who accept.

A new filter that someone left on the property. A blog set up on a different CMS than the store, where tracking was never replicated.

There is a check that resolves this in two minutes: look at all channels at once. If they have all dropped—organic, direct, social, and paid—the problem is almost certainly in the measurement and not in Google.

And if only organic has dropped, the analysis is done in Search Console. Not in the analytics tool.

Analytics shows all traffic mixed together, and there a drop could come from campaigns being stopped or a post ceasing to circulate. Search Console isolates what arrives from search, which is what matters.

Look at the shape of the drop

Before theorizing about causes, you must see how impressions, clicks, and CTR moved separately. Each combination points to a different place.

Impressions hold steady and clicks plummet

You are still appearing as before, but people are no longer entering. That is zero-click: AI Overviews, direct answers, search engine features that resolve the query without anyone leaving Google.

Be careful with a detail that is quite misleading. In this scenario, impressions sometimes rise, and by rising they sink the CTR even further because there are more appearances sharing the same clicks.

Seeing rising impressions and taking it as a good sign while traffic bleeds out happens more often than it should.

Impressions plummet and CTR holds steady

Here, positions have indeed been lost. This is the only scenario where it makes sense to start talking about algorithms or competition. Not before.

Everything goes to zero suddenly

When the drop is vertical and occurs in two or three days, you must stop thinking about Google and look inward.

A noindex that slipped in from a staging environment. A robots.txt deployed with the wrong configuration. Broken redirects.

The server down for hours. Or a manual action, which is rare but exists and appears as a notification in Search Console.

Cross-reference the exact date with the update calendar

Locate the day the drop begins and compare it with what Google has confirmed this year.

Update

Window

Discover core update February 2026

February 5 – 27

Spam update March 2026

March 24 – 25

Core update March 2026

March 27 – April 8

Core update May 2026

May 21 – June 2

Spam update June 2026

June 24 – 26

Google update calendar.

If the drop does not fall within any of those windows, you must stop blaming the algorithm. It seems obvious and it is not: a good portion of the drops attributed to an update started weeks before or after that update existed.

Regarding the June spam update, it is worth knowing that it lasted two days and that, according to what was reported in the sector, it was not aimed at link spam or domain reputation abuse. If the drop falls exactly there, those two hypotheses are largely ruled out.

There is another thing that repeats in every core update and deserves to be made clear. A core update is not a penalty. It is a general review of how content is valued, so it does not mean the site has worsened, but rather that other pages have come to be valued better for those queries.

The nuance changes everything that follows: you get out of a penalty by correcting a specific violation, and you get out of a core update by being a better option than whoever has overtaken you.

One last thing, and it is the one least followed. Google’s official documentation on core updates recommends waiting at least one week after the rollout finishes before drawing conclusions.

Analyzing while the update is still in progress is a guarantee of a wrong diagnosis, because the data is still moving while it is being read.

Separate what brings money from what brings noise

This is where most analyses fall short.

Queries must be divided into two groups: informational on one side and commercial and transactional on the other. Mixing them is what turns these meetings into a sterile discussion about graphs.

If what is dropping is informational traffic, there is not much to blame yourself for. It is happening everywhere. Ahrefs repeated its study of 300,000 keywords with data from December 2025 and found that the presence of an AI Overview correlates with a CTR about 58% lower for the top-positioned page.

A year earlier, that same measurement gave 34.5%. The direction is clear, and it is not reversed by publishing more articles of the same type.

However, you shouldn’t buy into the entire apocalyptic discourse either. Seer Interactive analyzed data from 53 brands until early 2026 and detected that the drop did not follow a straight line, with a partial recovery of CTR between December 2025 and February 2026. There was bleeding, yes. That AI has taken everything, no.

If what is dropping is commercial or transactional traffic, that is a different conversation and must be addressed quickly. That is where the money was.

Queries from someone about to buy or hire still generate clicks, because a generated summary does not close a purchase decision.

For a few months now, Search Console has allowed for the native separation of brand queries from generic ones, without tricks using regular expressions. It is worth using it before proceeding.

Losing brand searches and losing generic searches are two diagnoses that have nothing to do with each other: the first points to awareness or reputation, the second to SEO.

Review what broke in-house

It is the most common cause and the last one everyone thinks of, because it doesn’t make headlines and because it points inward.

The question is what was touched on the website in the eight weeks prior to the drop. Redesigns that wiped out internal links. Migrations with incomplete or chained redirects.

New canonicals pointing to the wrong place. A plugin that updated and rewrote titles and metadata at scale.

Template changes on the pages that were actually working.

And then there is the classic of classics: “improved” content.

Someone decides that an article that has been ranking for three years is outdated. They rewrite it entirely, change the focus, change the title, and remove sections that seemed redundant. Six weeks later, the traffic has disappeared and no one connects one thing to the other, because the change was made with the best intentions in the world and is now almost forgotten.

To avoid this pitfall, there is a fairly new feature in Search Console that almost no one is using: annotations on the graph itself.

Every migration, every template change, every major deployment, marked right there. When in six months someone asks what happened in March, the answer will be on the same screen where the question is asked.

What can be done if it really is AI Overviews

First, accept that part of that informational traffic is not coming back. Anyone promising to recover it all is selling smoke.

Second, change the objective. It is no longer about competing against the summary; it is about being one of the sources the summary cites.

And there is reasonably good news there: most of the sources cited in AI Overviews were already positioned on the first page for that query.

Traditional positioning work remains the foundation, not a parallel discipline that has to be built from scratch.

In practice, four things:

Answer the specific question at the beginning of each block, before developing it. Generative systems extract snippets.

Mark content with structured data.

Check that crawlers are not being blocked by oversight.

Reinforce what an automatic summary cannot manufacture: proprietary data, judgment, verifiable experience.

And measure citation, not just the click. On June 3, 2026, Google launched a specific generative AI report within Search Console that isolates impressions in AI Overviews, AI Mode, and Discover generative features, separate from traditional organic results.

It is in beta, only shows impressions (no clicks, no CTR, no queries) and started with a limited rollout, so you have to check if the property already has it available.

Even with those limitations, it is the first time official data on this has existed instead of estimates from third-party tools.

There remains a conclusion that is often uncomfortable. If the business depended almost entirely on informational traffic from the top of the funnel, the underlying problem is not AI Overviews. It is the model, and AI has only moved up the date on which it had to be reviewed.

The order, summarized

Verify that the drop is real and not a measurement problem.

See the shape of the drop: impressions, clicks, and CTR separately.

Cross-reference the exact date with the calendar of confirmed updates.

Separate brand from generic and informational from commercial.

Review what was touched on the website in the previous eight weeks.

And finally, look at the SERP: who has entered, who has risen, what formats have changed.

There is one rule that is worth more than the previous six combined: fix one thing, wait two weeks, and measure. Anyone who touches five things at once will never know which one worked, and in a month they will be in the same situation but with less margin.

When this stops being a diagnosis and becomes an audit

All of the above can be done with access to Search Console and a couple of quiet afternoons. To follow six steps, you don’t need to hire anyone.

What is not resolved this way are other scenarios. When patterns cross and there is simultaneously a technical problem, an update, and a loss of commercial intent, each masking the next.

When the site is large enough that the failure is in a template and not a page, and finding it requires reviewing thousands of URLs with criteria.

Or when three months have been spent fixing things and the graph remains flat, which almost always means the initial diagnosis was wrong from the start.

That is where an SEO audit makes sense, which does not consist of repeating these six steps but of answering what remains when the six steps are no longer enough.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does it take for traffic to recover after a core update?

There is no guaranteed timeframe.
