{"id":11577,"date":"2025-06-18T13:17:16","date_gmt":"2025-06-18T11:17:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wajari.com\/blog\/wordcamp-europe-basel-2025\/"},"modified":"2025-06-18T13:22:44","modified_gmt":"2025-06-18T11:22:44","slug":"wordcamp-europe-basilea-2025","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wajari.com\/en\/blog\/wordcamp-europe-basilea-2025\/","title":{"rendered":"WordCamp Europe Basel 2025"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The song \u201cSpace Oddity\u201d by <strong>David Bowie<\/strong> is one of his most emblematic works and its history is deeply intertwined with space exploration, late 60s pop culture, and Bowie&#8217;s own artistic development.<\/p>\n\n<p>The song was written and recorded in <strong>1969<\/strong>, a key year in human history due to the <strong>moon landing<\/strong> (the <strong>Apollo 11<\/strong> mission). <\/p>\n\n<p>Bowie was inspired by both this historic event and the film: \u201c2001: A Space Odyssey\u201d by Stanley Kubrick (1968), hence the wordplay in the title: \u201cSpace Oddity\u201d.<\/p>\n\n<p>It has also been interpreted as a metaphor for <strong>personal isolation<\/strong>, emotional disconnection, and existential fear, themes that Bowie would explore throughout his career.<\/p>\n\n<p>The main character, <strong>Major Tom<\/strong>, is an astronaut who loses contact with Earth and is left floating in space, which can be understood as a poetic image of <strong>alienation<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n<p>A feeling of isolation, emptiness, or disconnection from oneself or the environment. We can feel:  <\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Loss of sense of identity<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Lack of belonging<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Feeling of not having control over our life<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p>Many years ago, when I launched myself as a freelancer (more than 10 years ago) seeking different economic and work conditions, I was convinced that I could achieve it; to make a living from the digital world, but I felt emotional ups and downs that conditioned me a lot.<\/p>\n\n<p>It mixed: insecurity, impostor syndrome, times of prosperity and scarcity, etc. And of course, that feeling of lack of belonging and isolation, which evokes so much that wonderful Bowie song. <\/p>\n\n<p>In 2016, I felt lost, isolated, and a certain <a href=\"https:\/\/ciudadanob.com\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Juan Hernando<\/a> arrives in Pontevedra to found the first <a href=\"https:\/\/wajari.com\/en\/categoria\/wordpress-en\/\" data-type=\"category\" data-id=\"9\">WordPress<\/a> group. What it gave me in the field of human relationships is irreplaceable and immeasurable. \u2764\ufe0f   <\/p>\n\n<p>That&#8217;s why we&#8217;re still there, so many years later; I always quote <a href=\"https:\/\/maedastudio.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">John Maeda<\/a> with his quote:<\/p>\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>&#8220;I realized that <strong>PHP<\/strong> in the <strong>WordPress<\/strong> universe meant \u2018People Helping People\u2019, given the way each local community welcomes anyone who wants to learn computing, with no strings attached, no costs to get involved as a contributor. In open source, <strong>the software is the community<\/strong> and not just the code&#8221;<br\/>John Maeda <\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n<p>In the podcast \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/pocketcasts.com\/podcasts\/a4085f60-5672-0134-ec37-0d50f522381b\/64fc5a8e-5bd6-48b4-b8a5-ecccc0e6bc8c\" rel=\"noopener\">How I Built This with Guy Raz<\/a>\u201d, he interviews <a href=\"https:\/\/ma.tt\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Matt Mullenweg<\/a> and, although the interview is already some time old (2022), the <strong>genesis of our beloved CMS<\/strong> in the words of its founder is very interesting.<\/p>\n\n<p>It evokes the long journey to the present, and how much an idea can change people&#8217;s lives. <\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Journey and the Contributor Day<\/h2>\n\n<p>Just like in the year of <strong>Berlin<\/strong>, the <strong>Galicians at WCEU<\/strong> started our journey. We had our accommodation booked almost a year in advance. That&#8217;s the level of commitment for our European pilgrimage!  <\/p>\n\n<p>This year, a new member and friend joined us, who I&#8217;m sure after his pleasant experience, won&#8217;t stop attending, the great <a href=\"https:\/\/charrua.es\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Daniel Pereira<\/a> (Charr\u00faa) from the <strong>A Coru\u00f1a<\/strong> community.<\/p>\n\n<p>Although <strong>Juan<\/strong> and <a href=\"https:\/\/tabernawp.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Carlos Longarela<\/a> wanted to get ahead of us by a day, the rest of the Galicians met on a wonderful direct flight from Santiago de Compostela to Basel, Switzerland. I hadn&#8217;t had the opportunity to talk to her so much (in other editions) and getting to know her on a personal level has been really enjoyable.  <\/p>\n\n<p>Esther is the type of person who brightens your day and you know that every time we meet at these <em>gatherings<\/em>, we&#8217;ll have good conversations and laughs. \ud83d\ude07  <\/p>\n\n<p>We also met <a href=\"https:\/\/davidcuesta.es\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">David Cuesta<\/a> and his family, organizer of the WP group in Santiago, who have been faithful to the event for a couple of editions.<\/p>\n\n<p>Direct flight, arrival at the love suite \u2764\ufe0f, as every year, with surprises and anecdotes. <\/p>\n\n<p>This year, the limitation of only one set of keys, which if lost would cost us 700 Swiss francs, gave us a lot to play with and allowed us to extend the parties longer than some would have liked.<br\/>But it&#8217;s always worth it!<\/p>\n\n<p>The first lunch set a general trend for this WC that didn&#8217;t go unnoticed, the fact that all the <strong>culinary offerings<\/strong> in the venues were always international: Italy, Asia, Middle East, but Switzerland hardly featured in these options. The Spanish community is easily won over with food, it&#8217;s something important in our culture, so the odious comparison with the edition in <a href=\"https:\/\/wajari.com\/en\/blog\/wordcamp-europe-2023-athens\/\">Athens<\/a>, where the food was simply sublime, always comes up. <\/p>\n\n<p>Running to meet with my <strong>community team<\/strong> as we had to finish organizing the tables and signs for the <em>contributor day<\/em>, my favorite day of any WordCamp. WCEU 2025 <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n<p>This year I only knew one of the <strong>organizers<\/strong> from my team personally, so I was very eager to put a face to my lead organizer: <a href=\"https:\/\/routsis.gr\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Fotis Routsis<\/a>, and people like <a href=\"https:\/\/profiles.wordpress.org\/sumitsingh\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Sumit Singh<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/afthemes.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Shiva Shanker Bhatta<\/a>, who made incredible journeys to be here: <strong>India and Nepal<\/strong>, respectively. <a href=\"https:\/\/hipp.design\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Dennis Hipp<\/a> from Germany, now a Duolingo buddy \ud83d\ude09 <\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"769\" src=\"https:\/\/wajari.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/Fotis-1024x769.jpg\" alt=\"Fotis Routsis at the Contributor Day. many people dropped out along the way, so double merit that he knew how to hold the fort, and has managed to organize a wonderful CD, <em>community booth<\/em>, whose improvisation with the signatures has generated a very nice community space and a super interesting debate in <strong>WC Caf\u00e9<\/strong> regarding the future (excuse the redundancy) of <strong>\u201cfive for the <strong>TV<\/strong> table is not very popular, but it allowed us to onboard new people to the team, as well as reinstate the monthly meeting which, hopefully, will allow us to improve small details of the workflow. <\/p>\n\n<p>This way we ensure the documentation of all our events and that our knowledge is digitally stored on that great video and learning platform that is <a href=\"https:\/\/wordpress.tv\/\" rel=\"noopener\">WP TV<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n<p>I took the opportunity to record many people, a request from my communication team for WordCamp Galicia, especially <strong>Carla Pumutxa<\/strong> who is doing a wonderful job promoting this union of WC Vigo and WC Pontevedra to make a true <a href=\"https:\/\/galicia.wordcamp.org\/2025\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">WordCamp Galicia<\/a> with all the love it deserves.<\/p>\n\n<p>Wonderful, <strong>Juan, Carlos, Jorge, and Dani,<\/strong> who finished publishing the website that same day to start ticket sales.<\/p>\n\n<p>In our community team, especially Fotis, there was some concern about how the CD would turn out. <\/p>\n\n<p>There was some discouragement, we struggled to <strong>get table leaders<\/strong> for some working groups, and in the end, everything turned out perfectly, with a lot of work, high participation with <strong>640 participants, 33 table leaders<\/strong>, enjoying collaborating, sharing, and hugging each other, as it&#8217;s on this beautiful day when the European WordPress festival begins.<\/p>\n\n<p>Thanks to Juan and <a href=\"https:\/\/yordansoar.es\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Yordan Soares<\/a> for stepping up at the last moment for two key tables: <strong>community and support<\/strong>, which are usually among the most crowded.<\/p>\n\n<p>And look at the numbers, not just for the CD, <strong>2,082 tickets sold<\/strong>, people from <strong>84 countries<\/strong>, more than <strong>60 speakers<\/strong>, 4 workshops.<\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" WCEU 2025 <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n<p>That first day is usually the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.codeable.io\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Codeable<\/a> party, a party I attend religiously every year as \u201cCarlos&#8217;s wife\u201d (with apologies to Marga) and where the participants already know me as such \ud83d\ude09 <\/p>\n\n<p>I loved the place they chose, a spot on the river where you could see 3 countries: <strong>Switzerland, France, and Germany<\/strong>. Delicious food, great friendships, sharing wonderful debates, from WP topics, of course, to the future of freelancers, retirement, investments, cryptocurrencies. We covered it all that night.  <\/p>\n\n<p>I love the conversations at these events, where we free ourselves from any prejudice, laugh, and unwind, enjoying knowing that, like every year, we are privileged to be able to enjoy these moments.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Conferences and Parties<\/h2>\n\n<p>Second day of the WC already with the talks and the famous opening. Right in the stadium, I loved the location and the detail of the foosball tables (where I had fun to no end).  <\/p>\n\n<p>Did you know we invented it in Galicia? I mentioned it that day, but they thought we Galicians were crazy, I&#8217;ll leave the reference (for anyone who wants to check: <a href=\"https:\/\/emigracion.xunta.gal\/es\/conociendo-galicia\/galicia-multmedia\/galicia-50-prodigios\/invento-universal-del-futbolin-fue-obra\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Alexandre Campos<\/a>). Lovely! In Berlin, Fernando Tellado introduced me to Aleyda Sol\u00eds. Due to all the controversies of the past year, there was a lot of expectation about it; but I think it was a pleasant session without many surprises. <\/p>\n\n<p>Also, I liked seeing Mary up close and seeing what she conveyed to me. I get the impression that she&#8217;s a professional with a very interesting character, very willing to listen and who can bring interesting things to the project on an international level. Plus, Juan and I arrived early this time, so double points. \ud83d\ude09  <\/p>\n\n<p>In the evenings, the traditional <strong>Yoast pride party<\/strong>, the <em>after party<\/em> giving it all and even, we were able to do some sightseeing which I felt bad about going to Basel and not being able to walk its streets and various points along the river.<\/p>\n\n<p>Earlier I was telling you the story of WordPress and how, since its birth, it has been closely linked with <strong>blogs<\/strong> and with the democratization of content publishing on the internet. <\/p>\n\n<p>Therefore, I fulfill the tradition of <strong>writing about the WordCamp<\/strong> that I&#8217;m most excited about (after the Galician one, of course).
